For the last few months the CSB-Digital team has been working tirelessly to implement a vision for the future of the company, our software and your community. It is only fitting that, as we approach our second birthday, we should look back at what we have achieved and forwards to what there is still to do.
The company was created with the aim of creating professional solutions for the amateur market – powerful programs that you can afford. We have remained true to these aims while broadening the scope of both the software and the community. The support we have been shown by all of you in return has been nothing short of a miracle – we are still amazed everyday when we switch on our computers and see the thriving community.
Change is an inevitable part of development, and the company and the community are no exceptions. In the next five months CSB-Digital will be reborn, continuing to provide innovative and affordable programs while raising everything to a new level.
On April 21st we will launch FXhome.com – the new home of the largest, most dedicated special effects community on the net. As well as the updated community, FXhome.com will also be the home site of our new software range (check out the screenshots below). Malone is working really hard on the new site which will sport many new features some of which are listed below.
FXhome.com feature listing...
• Totally new site design.
• Online cinema for movies made with any of our products.
-- New movie categories.
-- New movie charts and rankings.
-- New movie screenshots.
-- New easy to browse archive.
-- New maturity ratings.
-- New self-management of movie submissions.
• Updated online community (forums, chat rooms) with significant re-organisation.
• Each product has its own section detailing its features.
• New online shop, get up and running in 10 minutes.
• Continued online real-time support with developers.
• The FXhome.com newsletter.
Preview image from FXhome.com website.
With the introduction of FXhome.com we will also be releasing Chromanator (see screenshot below), the first of our new programs to be based on the entirely new AlamDV G6 engine for Windows 98/ME/XP/2000 and MacOS X. The new G6 (generation six) engine has been designed from the ground up in order to remove the inadequacies of previous versions of AlamDV, while retaining all the innovations. As well as incorporating fantastic new features (more on these soon) and a new rendering engine, we should have much improved support for QuickTime 6, Microsoft DV and other standards.
Preview image from Chromanator Timeline.
Preview of the Chromanator Picture Interface.
Following Chromanator, on May 26th we will release AlamDV3, our new flagship application. This news will no doubt surprise many of you, who were expecting AlamDV2.5 to be the next release. AlamDV2.5 was to be based on a hybrid model that was somewhere between AlamDV2 and our new G6 engine - we have now decided to go all the way and fully embrace the new G6 technology.
Every upgrade since the very first version of AlamDV1 has been free to users - that's two years of updates and approximately 14 separate releases - but AlamDV3 will have a small upgrade cost, as it is an entirely new program and a very definite step up in the development of the technologies involved. We have, however, reduced the upgrade cost from £29.99 to just £19.99, as many of you were no doubt expecting a free upgrade to AlamDV2.5. The only exception is for people who purchased AlamDV2 after January 1st 2003, who will receive the AlamDV3 upgrade for free.
Moving immediately to AlamDV3 will offer many advantages. As well as the purpose-built G6 engine that introduces are whole host of new and enhanced features, AlamDV3 will also sport a new plugin management system, ensuring all installations are far quicker and easier. As with Chromanator, we will post extensive listings of new features nearer the time of release.
DigiGrade will be released on June 23rd, completing our new professional range of products. We hope to create a CD featuring AlamDV3, Chromanator and DigiGrade at some point before Christmas but it will probably be more expensive than buying the software online and very much dependant on our online sales.
The price structure of the software will be fairly simple. Each product will be available as an online download for £49.99. If you are an AlamDV2 user you will be able to get a 10% discount on the price of Chromanator or DigiGrade. If you buy any 1 of these new programs you will be able to get a 10% discount on the other 2 when they are released. This is how we currently see the pricing working but it may be subject to change in the coming months.
We will also be re-releasing our current iMovie iPlugins as well as a totally new set. The two current sets will be released as a single set under the name of iPlugins:Original – they have all been reprogrammed and will run much faster under iMovie 3. An all new set called iPlugins:DigiGrade has been created to take advantage of some of the new technologies we created for the AlamDV G6 engine and DigiGrade. Both sets are priced at £16.99 and will be released in May as online downloads.
As you can see, these developments are rather major but we are already prepared. We expect FXhome.com to have more than 40,000 members by the end of the year, which will eventually result in a change of server. Even with this increase in members, you can be sure we will still be listening to all our Gold users to find out how we can move forward and improve our services and products. You can expect lots of your ideas to filter into the updates for all our new programs – as ever, we are more than open to your suggestions for improvements.
You can be sure that throughout 2003 the entire CSB-Digital team will be trying to improve every facet of the software and the website – with your help we can make this place an even more exciting and rewarding community.
Thank you for all your support.
Schwar, Malone, Tarn and Tim.

Just posting another little image from Chromanator as its hanging about in my webspace. Tarn should have a video up in the next 2 weeks showing you some of the new functions of the G6 engine.
The 2 images in the main post show 2 of the 3 different interfaces in the G6 engine. The left hand image is the Object Interface (like the Object Timeline in AlamDV2). You should be able to make out the preview frame over one of the objects on the timeline, this is because the user is changing the in frame. On the right hand side we have the Picture Interface. This is where you make changes to colours for chroma key. All these changes can been tweened on the timeline below which has really easy manipulation of keyframes. All the new interfaces make great use of contextual menus which can be seen in action on the last screenshot below.

I just read about the upcoming changes and I cannot wait to purchase these new products. I purchased ALAMDV two yeras ago and although I haven't made any plugins I've followed the development of the company and its remarkable community with great interest and admiration.
I think what you have accomplished and what you will acoomplish is extraordinary and I wish you continued success.
The future looks great!

WOW!!! This is really cool guys. I think that it makes good sense to just embrace the new engine. In turn makes great sense to call it ALAMDV3. I am sure that there may be a small number of complaints about paying for it, however for that price I think it is very fare. After all it really is a "new" encarnation of the ideas behind ALAMDV. Still low cost and high fuctionality. All Great news, I can't wait to be in on the new stuff on deck. BTW Malone, nice look for the new site. Daddy Like-E

Wow..what can I say? I think we all couldn't be more pleased with what we are seeing today. AlamDV3
!? Talk about a surprise... Just yesterday I was gabbing about how we should focus on 2.5 instead of talking about 3 as it's a long way off. The website? Absolutley fantastic, I couldn't expect anything more. What else is there to say except for just absolutley stunning? You guys have been putting forth AAA work from the beginning, and now we are pushing into the realm of AAAA
. Can't wait for the future of Alam as a community, as I have a feeling our userbase will start to grow exponentially soon. The knowledge pool we have already in our cozy little 8,000 member community is staggering, and the future is just going to be drool-worthy. Now all we need is some CSB Action Figures, and we'll be all set! Awesome, awesome, awesome.
P.S. As Mecha brought up, are we keeping stats?

AlamDV.com and all our other domains will point at FXhome.com
Basically FXhome.com will be the new AlamDV website, but with our new programs added into the mix as well. All the current website systems will be kept but we should have big updates to most of them, I know Malone wants to do some big things with force points. His new cinema system is also looking quite amazing. I really can't wait for it to all go live so you can see his fantastic work. Tarn is also doing a great job creating text and information pages for the new site - it all sounds far too professional, but thats Tarn for ya
While I was programming AlamDV2.5 it became more and more obvious that the only way it was going to fulfill its potential was to move it to our new engine. By creating all our new applications on this new engine we can create an interface that is not only powerful and stable but also easy to learn. This upgrade isn't small, if you think of the update between AlamDV1 and AlamDV2 you still wouldn't be close. These applications are a totally different level compared to anything we have done before.
Tim has been doing a huge amount of work on the foundations of the G6 engine in C++. The interface will still be driven by Director but this doesn't really matter as just about every processor intensive task is done by Tim & Malone's code in C++.
Can't wait for you guys to see Tarns sneak peek

That is the only word to express my total shock and amazement. Nothing in my mind could have been further away from this.
Looks great...lol Flip "AAAA". I agree!
One thing. Not sure if its just the screenshot, but the new website looks too dark...which i think isn't a very good thing for such a friendly environment. I think the colors now are perfect...but that's just me.
Great job! You are now one step closer to taking over the world!

I have to say that AlamDV3 looks really cool, but I can't help but be put off a little by the added cost.
When I bought AlamDV2 many, many months ago, I asked if a version for OSX was going to be available. I asked this question directly to Schwar in an email and was told that as soon as Director was available for OSX, then all of us OSX users would get the program update free of charge. It appears now that I was misled. I originally bought this program due to this information. I would have eventually bought it, but not at the time.
I realize that the cost of these programs are very cheap, so I'm not looking for a lot of replies to this post with comments about the cost of the program.
I do have a question regarding the added cost though. When I purchased it cost me £49.99. Now it appears that the upgrade is going to cost £19.99. That adds up to £69.98. This is what it will cost me to have AlamDV3. So, here's the question -- What is the actual price of AlamDV3 going to be? I would hate to think that I'd have to pay more for upgrading this product than a new buyer.
Again, I will pay for the upgrade, I'm just very disappointed that I was misled.

This looks very cool the website, chrominator, ALAM DV3!!!!!
This being said I do have a couple of questions.
#1 As I am very close how do we know if we bought ALAMDV2 after or before Jan. 1 may sound like a silly question but I can't remember?
#2 Will we still be able to access and CREATE plugins for ALAMDV2 if so for how long?
#3 Will we still be able to enjoy the cool aspects of the website such as FORCE, avatars, banners etc.?
#4 Will this site still exist in this or any other form?
#5 How much is chrominator going to cost?
Maybe I have more than a couple of questions.........

I think at the top it said 49.99

I am not sure it's fair to say you were misled... It seems as though Schwar himself was a bit "misled" by his own program. The update of everything and the creation of AlamDV3 seems to have come out of the blue for CSB as well as us users.
I will happy to pay the price for AlamDV3 (which will probably be about $32, not bad) when it is released. And the look of the new site is awesome, I must say. I really do like the darker look of the new site compared to how it is now.
Thanks for a great program(s) guys. Can't wait to see how this all plays out

Firstly to jgriffeth...
AlamDV3 will retail for the same amount as AlamDV2 - £49.99
So many third part Director xtras that were used in AlamDV2 are not being converted to DirectorMX which has made that a MacOSX release of AlamDV2 impossible. With AlamDV3 we have created almost everything inhouse specifically for MacOSX and DirectorMX.
I'm sorry we can't release a version of AlamDV2 for MacOSX - please contact me at email@example.com
and I will make sure we can sort you out, I hate to feel I misled you in any way.
Now to justinsane...
1. Private msg me your credit card name (only the name) and I'll look you up.
2. AlamDV2 plugins will work in AlamDV3 so things should carry on as usual, although AlamDV3 plugins might not work in AlamDV2.
3. All aspects of the website that are going at the moment will be carried to FXhome.com with most of them being updated and advanced.
4. Yeah, it'll all be the foundation of FXhome.com.
5. As Magic_man12 said, it'll be £49.99 but as an owner of AlamDV2 you get a 10% discount.
Now it has gone 4:15 so I really must go to bed

The Chromanator interface is awesome! looks like a cross between combustion and alamdv1. Glad to see a new engine too
I don't understand though, this the 6th generation of the alamdv engine?! I count, er, like 2
All this news is so exciting! What's next a 3D app, hehe. Price is definetly fair, all things considering. New website looks very cool too! great job malone!
Will plug-in creators have a little more control or somethin for alamdv3? Maybe even a file format.
Oh, and you said when DigiGrade was going to be released, but you forgot to say what it does
Good luck with all these future installments guys!!

I am really looking forward to this. Every time you guys change something, it is not only an improvement, but it is so much more than I had hoped for; I can hardly wait to get my hands on the new product line and see what it can do. Moving ahead to the G6 engine and AlamDV 3 -- good call. It is where you were headed anyway, so why bother with the additional step, right? The new website -- this is already the absolute coolest site on the web, I can't even imagine what the FXhome.com will be like. Malone rocks.
Tarn, please finish the previews as soon as is humanly possible. Please.
I'm curious as to how much plug-in creation will change with AlamDV 3. Will we have more options, more control?
Incredible work, once again. Schwar, Tarn, Tim, and Malone -- thanks.

Digigrade can change colors on any part of the screen ( see lord of the rings making of )
It all looks good, but he only things I would want from Alamdv3 ( that i know of ) is :
A undo button ( i spent ages moving this plugin around the screen, then i pressed delete by mistake and the plugin was gone, it would have been good to press undo and get it back.
And a button to see what a mask would look like when rendered, at the moment the only way to see if your mask is spot on is to reneder.
Other than that you guys ROCK !!!

Wow - thats a bombshell.
I was about to have a heart attack - sitting here waiting for my free ALamDV2.5 (i took especial note of the post titled "If I buy AlamDV2 today and 3 came out next month" where you said AlamDV3 would be years away - thus stated i parted with 50 hard earned pounds (I am a student after all) thihnking im safe and then WAMMO!
No 2.5? Version 3 only? £20 upgrade cost nooooooooooo!
But then the light of hope shone into my eye again - all those who purchased AlamDV2 after Jan 1st 2003 will receive free upgrade
I thank you all for considering the recent buyers, and sparing newbies like myself and for momentarily stopping my heart when I saw Alam3 was out!
Lol - this could be very cool. Lookin forward to it now guys
Last few points - are you going to have to realise a new Plugger?
And I agree with post below - An UNDO button is soooo needed
THanks again all of you at AlamDV

From the beginning the plan was always to provide free upgrades from the first version of AlamDV all the way through to AlamDV2.xx. AlamDV3 will be a big step forward, a completely new program, rather than a simple update really, so will have an upgrade fee. You won't have to purchase the entire program again, just pay the upgrade fee.
The new programs are as follows:
AlamDV3 - major new version of our existing flagship program. Based around the totally new G6 engine, improved in every area and with many new features and increased functionality.
Chromanator - a sophisticated chromakeying (bluescreen etc) and compositing package, which you can use to combine your special effets, or to do picture-in-picture, or any number of other visual techniques.
DigiGrade - advanced colour manipulation package, enabling you to alter the colours in your videos. Can either be used to 'fix' shots that didn't come out quite the way you had hoped, or to enhance shots and give them a more filmic look. A good recent example of digital grading is the Lord of the Rings films - compare the greens of the Shire with the glowing Autumnal palette of Rivendell and the near-monochrome dreariness of the mines of Moria, for example.
AlamDV.com will be incorporated into FXhome.com. You can still use www.alamdv.com,
and you will be taken immediately to the relevant part of the new site. FXhome.com will serve to unite our programs and enable more people to communicate, exhibit their work and help each other out.

Sorry for anyone outside the upgrade window, most companies only allows those people that got the program in the couple of months before the new release to get a free update. 5 months is quite a long time.
The G6 or generation 6 engine is so called because it is the 6th we have made
. AlamDV1 and AlamDV2 both had serveral new engines created during their lifetime, the most recent being the AlamDV2.1 update. The G6 engine is different however as it marks a much bigger advance than anything we have done before (including the jump from AlamDV1 to AlamDV2).

I have to say, I do understand charging a upgrade cost for the new program. I've seen and heard people say things about it,but hey..if you use windows98or2000,xp..when you want to upgrade you have to pay for it.They gave free upgrades and this is a new verison and at least their not charging full price for it..which they could. I bought mine in nov or early dec of 2002..and i'll pay for the upgrade..Just wish i waited a month
Heres a idea for Alamdv..might bring you more buyers...Give a referal discount to members for people they send to buy it..when someone buys it,they put the persons email address or members users name in and they get a extra 5 or 10% discount on top of there 10% they all ready get off a new product.just a idea

Hi, this is my first post.
I just registered to tell you how happy I am to know there will be a Mac OS X version of your new alamdv engine. I just can't wait for this release. Will there be a french version?
Can you tell us about the Macintosh specs?

The recommended specs for our new programs will be higher than AlamDV2.
On the PC side you'll probably need a 700MHz+ Althlon or Pentium. While on the Mac a G3/G4 processor of 500MHz or more will really help.

Question, at what point is the cut of point for the free upgrade to AlamDV3, I brought AlamDV2 in Nov 2002, does this mean that I will get the free upgrade or have to pay?
I know that the month is Jan 2003 on the 1st post, but does this mean anyone who brought AlamDV before Jan 2003, get's the upgrade for free?
Little confused, as am sure other's are as well need 100% date cut off please.
So at least I know I need to start saving if need be.

um, why are you having this split off point anyway??
it seems unfair and stupid... What it someone is about 1 week or 1 day up.. they are going to be really upset.
And what is the point, the people who bought ALAMDV2 paid the same... right?

It was more unfair when I bought my PowerBook and a month later the new ones came out that were faster, better and CHEAPER.
Wait if you have too, but buying anything nowadays pretty much guarantees you'll be upset because something BETTER JUST CAME OUT AFTER YOU BOUGHT YOURS.
Programmers and deadlines dates are not good bed fellows, I wouldn't pressure too much, or the date could get moved again. And here I was thinking there wasn't going to be a v3.

Don't mean to be harsh here, but one word: Business.
EDIT: Yeah lol, codec3 spot on, how many times have I bought stuff only for it to be reduced in price the next day
..it happens. unfortunately.

I'm new, and have a question.
How many dollars (American) will Alam DV3 cost to someone who does not own previous Alam software?
Every friggen price on this site is in pounds, I'm clueless as to how much this is in American!

AlamDV2 is currently $78.61 although this is of course subject to change due to exchange rates. There is a currency converter you can use on the 'Buy' page.
