Does ALAMDV suck as a name??

We've been told by some advertising type people that this sucks and nobody will ever remember it - what do you all think? If we are going to change it then we better do it now....

Please help...

I like the name, I'ts memorable, and rolls off the tongue quite nicely. And it had the ILM in joke.

Too forgetable. Shame we didn't think of Industrial Light and Budget... 'iLAB'... perfect! I suggested Irresponsible Light and Magic, but the abbreviation is ILM...

I think we're sticking with ALAM for now. At least it's unique, and apart from a few Middle East tourism sites a web search for ALAM gets you purely links to this site.

I dare say we'll open up the floor for suggestions when naming future applications.

ILB was the one but ALAMdv will do because over time you get branded...later for the advertising jerks who want to convince you they know better and come for your cash before you have earned it...go with your gut like you doing and it will work itself out...better yet if they want to chnage the name let them come buy the company for gigabucks and go out and make a new product doing the same thing under a different name while you relax on the beach in Bali...I was there last week...DO IT!

AlamDV's a good name, but most people don't know exactly what it is. Maybe you should lean toward a new name which tells people exactly what it does. The idea of DV-FX is good, something like that would be better.

Here is my take, forget the maketing wiz's. ALAMDV is a good name and I will tell you why, it looks good, it sounds all impressive and I happen to think it is clever. Also I personal do not think it will matter if people know what it means, i bought and used it before I ever knew what the name meant. Plus you relesed i with that name and it seems right to keep it. Another option would be to cut to the chase and call it "SEEMEPEE 5000"
or Super Easy Effects Magnificantly Effortless Post-production Error Eraser 5000

Suddenly I feel Like I am living March and April 2001 all over again! (Sniffle) I love you guys. This forum has been a great place for silly and creative banter. Did I just use banter in a sentence? Wow, there I go again using silly words like banter. IS that how one would spell it? Where was I going with this? Lack of sleep and to much sugar are not good for the Brain...

I like the name AlamDV, it sound professional...but I think AlamDV-FX(somebody posted earlier) is not only just as slick, but it's more true to the nature of the program. Either way I think the program is great, I am excited to see what Version 2 can do!

At first, AlamDV sounded unproffesional and extremely stupid. Then it sorta grows on you, and I like it a lot better than the uncreative names like: Photoshop and Premiere. A good company that has creative names is Macromedia. They have: Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks. I bet when they started they had just as much skepticism, but then look what happened... the programs became famous. Besides, if AlamDV becomes spread enough it might be unanamous with easy special effects(like Xerox is with copying). Stick with AlamDV. Hmmm... What does AlamDV stand for? I have been using it for a couple months and still don't know what it means!

Any marketing student will tell you the name is everything. Because it's true. Your name must be unique, and AlamDV is.

Once you guy are grounded everyone will be saying AlamDV this, AlamDV that.

I really like the way you guys are developing your company. My prediction is, like Apple Computers, Inc. you may not be the dominating player in your market but if you keep true to your customers, they will stay true to you.

You will always have a good chunk of the market that will be very dedicated to your products.

Speaking of Apple, Please be sure to keep current with the sofware used on that platform, Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie.

Thanks, a new loyal fan.

If Alam DOES stand for 'Amateur Light and Magic', its a fantastic name! Keep it.

Perhaps you should make this slightly better known though...

There again, its is quite a funny surprise when you find out.

Personally, I like to use "An acronym for an acronym" . . . . .ADV.

I think that if there would be ANY change in name at all, ADV would be cool.

Yeah, technically-speaking 'ADV' is merely an abbreviation and not an acronym. AlamDv is nice once it's known, but trying to explain it to someone outside the field of computers and video is hard. Whereas Photoshop is fairly self-explanatory. Then again 'Windows' doesn't give you a damn clue as to what it does... which is nothing much really, anyway. smile

I'm gonna stick with Alam.

Yeah I think a name change would be cool. I don't know why but now that I think about it, AlamDV kinda sounds like an "amateur" program if you know what I mean. It can also be misread easily (AlarmDV).

I don't know, it's good, but I think a (good) new name would be better.

EDIT: And as demonstrated by mister Brettsta here (smile) there are loads of way to pronounce it. Unlike, say, Adobe Programs (Premiere, try finding two different ways to pronounce that smile)

Anyways, how about iFX (Industrial Effects) ? Though, I'm not quite sure about the "i". Makes it look too geared to Apple :&rt; . Though, making it geared toward Apple could possibly generate more business.

I think it was pretty much a joint idea, between Schwar and another FXHome veteran - The Great One, who basically needed a program like AlamDV for use in uni projects.

First post for me here.

Personally, I came upon AlamDV not by searching for the product (never EVER heard of it before), but rather by investigating how to do the lightsword effect online for geeky home movie ideas I have (AlamDV was a periphery link on a how-to site).

It took me a few days to remember the term AlamDV. It was embarrassing, really. Here I was, trying to tell all my friends about this COOL new program I found, and I couldn't even remember the name. It kept slipping out of my mind like quicksilver. I even had problems remembering the name writing this post (I kept typing Alam3D, and jsut went back and corrected the typos). razz

I had NO problem whatsoever remembering the name Chromanator (bought it as well).

I still have no idea what any significance the AlamDV name has...perhaps that would help in remembering it. Anyway, that's my experience for what it's worth.

I really see this product as a revolutionary tool for home users such as myself. Had I ever seen Alam3D or Chromanator in any store, I would've bought it on the spot. Perhaps a CD release would help grow the market for this product...it deserves to thrive and dominate.

Now I just have to learn how to use it in conjunction with my editing package, Pinnacle Studio 8... razz
