DigiGrade postponed

While AlamDV3 is just around the corner, there is unfortunately some less good news. As some of you will already be aware, we have been concurrently developing three video post-production programs for a long while now - Chromanator, AlamDV3 and DigiGrade.

AlamDV3 and the updated version of Chromanator are progressing as planned, but we have had to put DigiGrade on the back-burner for now. Development costs on each program are huge and DigiGrade's creation now depends upon the success of Chromanator and AlamDV3.

We are still committed to creating the most advanced and affordable digital colour grading package in the world, it's just that it's going to have to wait a while!

Everything depends on sales of AlamDV3 and Chromanator - so be ready to spread the word!

Nope, from what I've seen its pretty different ot Magic Bullet. We're thinking its more like Colossus (the $350,000 application used in LOTR) for £49.99 wink

Hi
Just wondering........

After my Starship Troopers film I will be making Dungeons and Dragons ( The final cartoon episode that never got made but the script was written )
http://www.mindspring.com/~michaelreaves/D&Dpreface.html

Anyway me thought is could DigiGrade make the Live footage look like a cartoon ( not 100% like a cartoon ) but with the Cartoon feel to it ?

Thanks, i'll still be buying it smile and i hope one of the presets is a Starship Troopers one. eek

Hmm..I'm not sure it would be able to do that. If it could, I'd be mighty impressed, as that goes beyond just color synthesizing. You should check out the "Waking Life" tutorials for Photoshop, that is what you are looking for. You can find one of the Waking Life tutorials here - Waking Life Tut Tut

So the presets will be like plugins for AlamDV? Can users create plugins and then submit them to be downloaded?

As for the waking life thing, Waking Life was rotoscoped entirely in a program that the makers created. A lot of people will say that it's an automated process, but it's not. Watch the DVD if you don't believe me. So I say the best way to do it, would be to use something like vector paint and a bunch of different layers in after effects or commotion or something. It seemed like the way they did it was closer to using the pen tool in Illustrator... Anyway, watch the special features on the DVD. Got some useful info.

I find that just the plain "Posterize Edges" filter in Photoshop gives great results. Yes, Waking Life was rotoscoped, but youd can still create nice effects with automation. The tut I linked was done with automation and looks very satisfactory. Your best bet is just to tinker around with different filters and settings and rotoscope a few areas to a certain degree. Making video look like cartoon is one of the most entertaining special effects you can do. Enjoy it. biggrin

Yeah, I'm too lazy to do all the rotoscoping myself. I'll try the tut you posted, flip. I have nothing to use it for, but hey, might as well learn everything I can, right?

Alright, I just put together a short test. I just ran it through photoshop as a filmstrip and applied the "Flatten Color" action from the Waking Life tutorial I posted, Posterize Edges, and then Film Grain. What's left is what I would consider a very cool looking visual effect, considering it took what, 10 minutes? If you took the time to tweak with the filters and add new ones, I'm sure you could come up with just the right effect. Be sure to post your comments, I'd like to hear them so I can keep toying with it. This is still a very much WIP, just sort of laying the ground work. Check out the file here (Right click, Save As 726kb)

Can the background be brighter, kinda like what they did with LORT where they made the grass really green, if your way can't do it then I use Digigrade and your method. razz

Have been working on a toon application in my spare time (not that I have much), might be a future expansion for Chromanator. The results are pretty impressive... but there is some way to go yet.

All the new programs will have demos, similar to the AlamDV2 demo, and we'll also be providing video tutorials and video examples of what it can do. Don't worry, they'll be plenty of material to show off how cool the programs are before you buy it. biggrin

I was askin my friend how magic bullet was and he said that it took him about 6hrs to render a 2 minute trailer. Do you think that digigrade will be about the same speed? Not that i would complain, im just wondering.

Cardinal - It depends what resolution and colour depth the film is scanned in at. The first version of our new apps will support up to 32bit colour but in the future we will be hoping to support higher colour depths.

Not at all. Flip's post is clearly very old and not entirely accurate. We hope to release DigiGrade very soon, and if everything goes to plan, then FXhome.com and its products have a very bright future. smile

I'm new here, so if I missed something please excuse me.

Anybody who owns the extended edition of the first LOTR most likely saw the documentary about Color Grading. I thought it was very cool, but couldn't find a consumer-level product that could do the same.

So if I am reading correctly, this will do it? Or is it based on presets instead of more or less "in depth" grading?

I hope I made my question clear...

DigiGrade does exactly the same kind of things as in that documentary. The main difference, of course, is that the one they used for LotR is designed for high end film work, whereas DigiGrade is aimed more at home/semi-pro users. The same concepts are involved, however.

Will DigiGrade be able to make your footage look like it is at night, when you filmed it during the day? I've tried with some blue overlays its not to bad, but i was just hoping for somethin more professional looking. For example, making it more black than instead of it being blue but still transparent enough to see the footage.

Have you done color grading? If someone is skilled enough to make a very good Saving Private Ryan one I hope they will be nice enough to upload a preset to the interweb. And any color can be shifted to anything if you do it correctly. Try and AE demo or something to get a low level grasp on what color grading is.

Ok, I am assuming you mean AE, and also that you are on Windows. I suggest you update this info in your profile so you get more efficient help. Here is the After Effects Demo Link. Also, here is the link for some grading tutorials in AE so you can see about what Digigrade can do but the AE version of grading will be on a much lower level because the built in grader isn't TOP noch, not very advanced because it isn't focused on it. You will however get the main idea.

Example:
Ungraded:
Graded:

The grade here provides a colder blue look, almost sleek and seen a lot in many modern shows today.
