I have been thinking about this alot and i was thinking: Why dont we make a topic that is just for people with effects challenging each other. Someone just puts some sorta effect, no matter how crazy the effect is. Then people could try it out and show it. Maybe not a brilliant idea, but i thought it would be pretty cool! Bring on the challenges!!!!

add on to ur idea - sum1 posts some effectless-footage and people edit it with fx and the best (by vote maybe) wins (the reason I suggest this is that every can do it, no matter if they have a cam or not)

Here's the problem you're all running into: No one wants to participate because there is no solid incentive.
And to be brutally honest, I don't think that you guys are going to be able to conjure up something to make people want to spend a couple hours / days on a decent looking effect. A pat on the back isn't something I'd do hard work for. Unless I was coincidentally making a similar effect for learning purposes at the same time.
Or you just so happened to have a hundred bucks.

Even though I ain't trying to organise this (just gave a suggestion) but if some or the avanced fxhomers with a lot of force were judges, they vote together and each give tht winner +10 each or so...

Why don't you just ask someone to upload a few second clip of their best effect ever?

If you like making movies, incentive.
I think it would be fun.

Ok, so what you're saying is "I suggest something, and you do it", right?
That's an alright concept. Some limiting factors:
1. Not everyone here has the capabilities to do effects other than in
AlamDV, which severely limits the chances of seeing a lot of
2. There are only a few really good effects creators on this site
(no offence to anyone, of course), so that also limits it. If you
suggest doing a bullet time shot of someone jumping through
a window, for one thing, it's not going to look good at all
unless the person is a professional, and for another, even if
someone DID attempt it, that's a lot of work for (as mecha said)
a pat on the back.
I like sidey's idea about asking people to submit their best effect ever. That opens up a lot of new possibilities, because people have already done these effects, and so on and so forth.

But then aculag, it would still mean that the people who do the best films and what not will win. So i still think there is complications. I think andrew has a good idea. But of course what has to happen is there has to be enough people whilling to do it.
There should be Some sort of prize people would like. I have an idea. Maybe what you could do is split it up into different groups, like best effects. Then hmm best sound, then best script, then maybe best stop watch animation. And what you could do is that people that want to enter, have to give like 2 - 3 force points. Then once the final thing is over. The force points are totaled. and shared off by how many have enetered into the different groups, like you give 1 force point each group. i mean like say someone has giving in 3 force points, 1 point goes to one of the groups, so the person in one group might get like 20 force points or somting
That might open it out a bit more. but it is hard!

No offense, but that's got to be one of the the lamest things I've read...

whats so lame about it?, if people Who make movies on here whos capabilities are better then everyone, they have more chance of doing it better, or doing it at all. You gotta do something thats wide spred and doesnt just mean u have to do one certain thing

No...What you basically said is that it's unfair if the people who make a better product win a competition that's all about making the best product!
That's the whole point of having a competition!

na, it must of sounded the wrong way sorry . But what i meant. Was people here who have capabilites higher then most people will win. So it will be the same thing over and over, of people winning. Like speical effects. Like i dont have as much products as certain people, or money!

But that is what makes you rise to a challenge...if you aren't as good as somebody...then you won't win...but you know that next time you have to work extra hard to beat everyone...you have a very backward ideology about competition...it is rather funny...I can't play basketball as good as my friend...whoa is me why should i ever try to improve on anything in my life...i suck and will always suck...that isn't the way to look at a situation...catch my drift biff???

There is a simple solution to the problem of 'the same people always winning'.
Have, say, three different classes of entry: beginner, intermediate and expert. That way, the newbies can enter the beginner category and not feel embarrased or intimidated and the pros can enter the expert category and slug it out in a no holds barred FX competition.
As for prizes, come on guys, we're all amateurs here! We don't do it for money or reward. We do it because we love it and a little competition can spice things up for us. The best prize anyone could win is the respect and recognition of our peers!

I was sorta thinking the same way. It makes people try harder to do some effect. Most people do effects that they KNOW they can do, so why not getting out of the stuff they can do and to stuff they cant...push people harder. It actually might help people do better effects, you never know!

As for Products available, i dont have alot either, but if you are creative, you can think of someway to do an effect. Thats the thing about FX, if you dont have all the pro tools, you can still create a cool effect, if you are creative in doing it!
*HOPE SOMEONE GETS THIS*

Let's give everyone a GOLD STAR
and call it a day!
And in case you guys didn't know, force points as an incentive is like handing out pennies.

But most people already got that...And you can't buy video games with respect.

Sidey here is the new video game you were waiting for....now you have now reason to not make an effect....and it might also help with the sudden influx of 7 year olds on the site

hehe, you must lead a very sheltered life.
But seriously, I think the idea is a good one in principle but does need some incentive and also needs to be less restrictive than someone saying just go and do bullet time jumping through a window.
I think you should make it like a skateboarding competition or whatever. Everyone enters 3 of their best examples of effects and then they are scored on ambitiousness, originality, realism and so on. Then if its a quarterly competition you could say that you can't enter the same effect twice to keep it fresh and people on their toes. That way people might enter a classic lightsabre for example that is done really cleanly or they might try a 3d effect that is harder but doesn't look so real. The newbies would be in with a chance because they might try something thats really original. This gives people, who want to, the chance to use further apps to try new things but the people who are limited to Alam can still compete by doing an old effect really well.
I think having this sort of competition with a title may be enough to attract people or we could arrange for every entrant to throw £1 into the pot for the winner or something like that.

Why do you suppose I would be quoting myself in a post about a "nonexisting" effect competition , and what do you suppose that link in my quote goes to and how long is it till Labor day any way? HMMMMMMMM I wonder!

Hehehe. I'm only kidding around. The competition might be a good idea if people actually entered, and if it was fairly run.
Note: All participants who wish to have a high rating please mail your bribes to the appropriate judges. Thank you.
